Tua Pek Gong

Hi All,, its been so long since my last blog update,, sorry.... cos , i've switched my career path to become a full time real estate consultant since April 2011
Thank everybody for the support and interests of my blog. i will still be doing this specialize traditional skill but with a different mentality as a hobby instead. Ok, enough of my stories....

This is the most recent art piece i've just finished restoring, as seen from th 1st pic on the left, this statue has already lost its shine in its colors. This particular "Tua Pek Gong" job was referred by one of my ex client .

As usual,, i cleaned the statue and then paint a layer of base coat oil base sealer to the whole statue,, and of cos,, i got to remove all its beard and accessories before the base coat.

Then step 2 is to re-applying the gold area with genuine gold leaflets, this is the most time consuming process and also requires lots of knowledge and skills in order to achieve the best shiniest result.

Next is to fill in the colored area with water base paint at least 2-3 coats per color. Then followed by decorating the statue with new crystals, beards hat decor. Job done!!!!

On the left is the statue of "Guan Yin Buddha" , its about 10 inches in height and is made of wood. Due to long time offerings, the gold has turn blur and the owner wants to refurbish the statue.

This is the statue after my 5 days of refurbishment, you can easily spot the glaring gold leaves coating on the statue with lots of difference especially the shines.

this is a very old temple located at telok blangah "tien gong miao"we've been engaged by the temple to construct a series of sculptures, let's start off from the main entrance , we are gonna construct 2 dragons curling around the entrance pillar on each side all the way up to the top of the main entrance with the 2 dragons facing each other. 1st, we need to construct the dragon's skeleton structure using 20mm-40mm iron rods then we weld and covered up the structure with wire mesh. its the most tedious part of the whole project b'cos all we used were some manual tools for us to bend and built up the entire structure.
2nd step is to apply 1st layer of cement onto the constructed iron dragon then followed by 2nd,3rd,4th layer then slowly sculpt the finishing.

this is the area for our famous "tua ya pek & di ya pek" who are the hell gods. many people recognise them as the black and white. i'm tasked to do a painting of a cave and some bamboos on the 3 sides of the walls, its suppose to be a simple project but because that i will be luminous paint for the drawings, its not as easy as using normal paint( luminous paint is very diluted). i started off by painting the base colour to black in order to create a scary and spooky feel for the area, i started off painting the cave which looks very deep and pitch black going inner, then i starts to draw and paint some bamboos plants. its really very very weird doing this project, as seen in the pics, once i've started painting, all pics i've taken have lots of white translucent poker dots all over the photos....i've been in this trade for so long but this is the 1st encounter which i really can't explain???? ok,,back to work... after drawing bamboos, i've added 4 little ghost in the area (try to find them if u can) then i've also added 2 bats on each corner of the cave (as customer request). lastly, i've added some mist and foggy effect to the entire area,,,this really spooks the whole picture...the finishing of this project was really amazing when we turn on the neon light tube. everything seems so alive due to the luminous paint... (sadly, couldn't even take a single beautiful shot of the lights off effect) the only pic which can be seen on photo is the last pic (which was taken without lights) i'm very satisfied with this project and so were my customers....hope u like it too..;)

on the left is the statue of "tua pek gong" its about 18 inches in height and its one of the very nicely hand carved statue i've refurbished. i'm tasked to refurbish the "tua pek gong" . 1st step is to clean up the statue and remove all moustache and beard, 2nd step is to apply base coat (oil base sealer) to the statue , 3rd step is to apply special glue (for gold leaf), 4th step to apply genuine top grade hong kong gold leaves, 5th step is to apply all colours and lastly is to attach new beard and moustache for the "tua pek gong". and there u've got a brand new "tua pek gong" statue.

this is the budhha statue made of copper, as seen fromt he picture, some part of the statue turn rusty/corrosion thus parts of the gold leaf done previously came off, in order to ensure not to encounter this problem, i've got to stripped off all gold and paint from the statue to its origin and re-do everything.

bit by bit i scrapped away the exisiting paint from the statue then i de-rust it using sand paper and metal hair brush. after de-rust, i've used a very special type of solution which is called anti corrosion chemical, then after applying 4 times of the chemical, i painted another 2 coatings of oil base sealer to prevent the statue from corrosion again.

this is the most common deity that all taoist recgonised, its the highest ranking deity name "Yu Wang Da Di" or commonly known as "Ti Gong"

this is the mini temple done by us using cement in 2005, as seen in the pics, the owner wants us to do a repainting job.

this is the finished job, i've changed some colours to give it a cleaner and brighter look, i've faked the sign board to look like stone carving, layed the inner flooring to bright red ceramic tiles and used oil paint for the roof of the mini temple.

this is the brand new look of the horse after my 10 days of hardwork, i've used 4 days to removed the exisiting hair and old layer paint then paint the entire statue with oil base sealer, another 4 days to paint the entire horse and
2 days to paint its cloud base, joss stick holder and attach new hair to the horse statue, i've done some toning to its body in order to see and feel the horse powerful muscles and strength.

on the left are some pictures of the "horse of guan gong" its made of cement and its as big as a live size horse, this sculpture was made by us about 10 years ago, in order to make the sculpture more lively, we even used real hair and attached onto the statue, as you can see from the pictures, the colours of the horse has worn out and most of its hair had been plucked away by crows and other birds.( thats what the care keeper told me) i'm tasked to re-vamp the horse statue and to give it a brand new look.

On the left is one of the popular thaliand buddha name Chinala. its fully mould of copper and standing at 16 inches. this statue was originally coated with gold paint and the owner wants to have a gold leaf job. my first step is to sand off the existing gold paint and make sure that the suface of the statue is clean and smooth. then, i need to coat it with a special anti rust paint mainly for copper usage to prevent it from rusting in future, 3rd step is to coat it with oil base sealer for a smoother finishing and for another layer for rust prevention.

this is a common front door of a common HDB flat. i've used black oil paint to paint the gate & door. i've added some flowers patterns on the door for a unique look b'coz most people don't really do much to their doors as there is nothing much for them to do except changing it. isn't it cheaper & special to have a one & only self designed painted door in ur neighbourhood??next is the big pc of wall in the living room. i've used brown for the repeat patterns design using free hand painting without any pencil sketching. then i've decided to use green for its base but i added some darker green to let the entire picture have better colour contrast. next is the pc of wall behind the plasma tv. alot of people likes to decor the tv wall with lots of items like photo frames or fancy lightings,but it is better to keep the background of the tv set simple so that we can really concentrate on the movies in the tv rather than the wall decors!! i've choose brown then slowly blant into beige colour to match the house furnitures. skills are definitely needed for nice and smooth blanting of 2 colours. then is the small wall in between the 2 bedrooms entrance. i've also used the same idea as the tv wall in order to match up the living room colour. just some simple decoration can be done (DIY) to bring some cozy feel to ur home.next is the bedroom's door, its a very basic plywood door that comes with a standard HDB flat and definitely unattractive. i've painted it to with darkbrown and toned it with some black to give it a natural raw wood finishing look. i've also design it to match with the bedroom's wardrobe's door. its much cheaper and hassle free to paint the door than to changed it!!

then its the most important part of the house, the master bedroom! we spent most of our intimate hours in this cozy little place so u gotta make ur sleep room as comfortable as possible. i've decided to painted the entire background of the bed to a wooden wall finishing and to match its furnitures colours, its simple but yet unique cos most painters do not have this ideas or skill needed to do the job.
lastly to introduce u is the most annoying parts of the house that doesn't look nice in whatever angle... yes,,, its all the sewage pipes and water pipes in the bathrooms and kitchens!! rich people have rich ways that is to construct wooden shelves or artificial cabinets to hide the pipes. its indeed a clever way but it doesn't comes cheap and if anything were to happen to those pipes, and repairs were needed to be done,, u've gotta tear down whatever u've constructed to hide the pipes due to obstruction. hence, i've come up with an idea of painting the pipes beautifully and proudly show it to the guests without much burning to ur pockets.. i've painted the pipes to look like tree trunks and added some twisting and curling plants crawling up the pipes. me myself thinks its a very great and cheap idea that i've come up with...hope u guys share the same thoughts..heehee.

on the left is the statue of "qian shou guan yin" thousand hands goddess of mercy. its about 16 inches in height and made of wood. the statue was wholely gold-plated and some parts was broken. i've decided to put on some colours to its skin and re-gold the rest of the statue. its a very tough job due to its many many hands obstructing my movements of my brush. i used about 6 days to finish this project. the owner was very glad with my job. (this is one of my favourites finishing)

this is another statue of "guan yin pu sa". its about 12 inches in height and its made of granite stone. its very heavy. as seen, the gold portions of the statue have came off due to wrong method of maintainence. the owner also wanted to add some colours to its skin. i've chosen a very light pinkish beige for the statue and added some "swarozki" crystals onto its clothing.

this is the statue after my 3 weeks of painting. i've used genuine hong kong gold leaves for some parts and changed much of the origin colours. i've used some very thick fishing line for the strings of the "pi pa" (chinese guitar) if you can see clearly, there are stains all over the face b'cos the chinese believe that all statues of god needs to be "kai guang" as in enlighten so that the soul of god can enter the statue.all the stains you see are human blood from tongue.i coated the statue with special protective varnish for better maintainence in future. (this is one of my favourite project)

on the left is a cement sculpture of (the 4 heavenly kings) "si da tien wang". its about the height of 2 adults and was custom design and sculpted in 1999. it was a very very long duration project due to the size of the figuring. in sept.08, they called us back for a repaint job. the sculpture was in quite bad shape when i went there at first, the ventilation was very poor so the smoke of all the incense were being trapped in the temple and thus the sculpture became very black and oily. i nearly can't see any cloured parts initially

the 1st pic was shot halfway through its very very long surgery. when i saw my car in this stage, i still couldn't imagine how the end product will turn out to be. i left my vehicle in the workshop for 20 days (initially agreed within 8 days lor!!) i'm very happy with the end product when i 1st saw it as i don't want my ride to be over exeggerated but yet different from others on the road. but 1 issue to complain about is the workmanship of the workshop,especially the paint work. after i took my ride for about 1 week, some cracklines started forming at some of the joining. the workshop agreed to touch up for me and said it will need only 1 day, i'm very afraid that the 1 day might turn into 1 week again...

notice the big fish at the bottom of the pillar, its also custom made from cement sculpture. you can see lots of chinese temples have this type of fish "carps" "li yu" in mandarin as they believe it brings wealth.these sculptures were also made in 2000 and also needed a repaint job. i've changed some colours from the origin and also coated it with special varnish for easy maintainence in future.and i forgot to mention that i've changed its eyeballs from marbles to "swarozki" crystal. cool!!!

this is the main entrance of the temple and its the main signboard. its a very famous temple in singapore with lots of devotees. the temple wanted me to do a gold-leaf plating to the three chinese wordings. each character is about 4ft ht & 3ft width. its standing at about 10 meters off ground. look at the shineness of the end product.

this pair of dragons were custom design and made of cement sculpture in 2000. its a very complicated design as you can see from the pics, it has got nothing to support the sculpture except extension from the pillar. we need to construct everything accurately in order for them to look identical. the temple called us back for a repaint job in oct 2008. we've used special imported gold paint and coated the entire sculpture with special waterproof varnish for easy maintainence in future.

this is a custom made joss stick incense holder. we started by constructing the skeleton of the structure. as seen in the pic, the initial design is different from end product. initial design was a pair of "qi lin" on each side and a lion head on each of the holder's support. but the customer decided to change to lotus flower design at last minute meeting. the entire holder was handcrafted using cement. we've decided to use this high grade gold paint for finishing to make it glamorous and easy maintanence for the temple caretakers.

this is the bird cage after my many many long hours of touching up. i've used gold leaf to brighten all the fine cravings and also gave the figurings some colour. you can now see much more details of all the cravings on the bird cage. some human figuring's head is not much bigger than the alphabet "O" found on your keyboard!!! just imagine how much concentration i need to put in to draw their eyeballs.... i've spent nearly 10 days on this project and charges him $1200.00. its byfar the smallest figurings i've ever done.

on the top is a bird cage for "puteh" birds. its a very fine piece of handcraft. its made from very good wood and got lots of carvings done on to decorate the bird cage. the owner find the details of the carvings aren't very clear b'cos of the 1 tone colour. the owner wants me to touch up the carvings to brighten up the details.the bird cage is just about 2 ft in ht and 1 ft in width.

on the left is a statue which is not so commonly pray named wang lao sien si. it is believed to be the god of medicine and cure. there is a temple in macpherson rd opposite winsor hotel that holds this god. the statue is about 16 inches in height excluding the boxed platform and its made of wood.

on the left is the "wen" guan gong. its about 16 inches in height and its made of wood. if you have read my previous postings, i've told you before that there are two types of guan gong. one is the "wu" guan gong which will hold a big knife. the other tpe is the "wen" guan gong who will normally be holding on to a book. in recent years, there is another new type which holds a weapon on one hand and holds a book on the other. they named this the "wen" "wu" guan gong.

on the left is a buddha from cambodia, the buddha statue is made of copper and the platform and the background is made of wood. the buddha itself is about 10 inches in height. i've used high grade genuine gold leaves from hong kong for this project. you can compare the reflective and shineness to the other buddha statue using the lower grade gold leaves from thailand. i've used 6 days to complete this project and charges $1500.00.

this is the buddha after gold plating. although i've used lower graded gold leaves from thailand, but i still managed to give the buddha a shining ,reflective finishing. if you pay attention at the statue at a nearer distance, you will be able to see a bit of different coloured patches of gold on the statue. that's one of the problem using the lower grade gold leaves.

i've used 7 days to complete this job and charges $1500.00

on the left is a buddha from thailand standing at 24 inches in height. the statue is made of fibre glass and given a artificial stone finishing. it might look very heavy but is actually only about 4 kg. the owner wanted to have the buddha gold plated, but due to budget, he wanted me to use a lower grade gold leaf from thailand.

this is the brand new look of the "wu" guan gong after my makeover. notice the shineness of the gold and the new shaped eyebrowns. i've also added some patterns on the platform, changed the moustache and some colours. job duration 4 days. charges $420.00

on the left is one of the common god you've often seen named guan gong. just for your knowledge, there are 2 different types of guan gong. on the left is the "wu" guan gong as you can see that its holding on to a weapon. "wu" in chinese means martial arts.its about 12 inches in height and made of wood. its very dusty and dirty due to poor maintainence. and i'm gonna give him a good makeover job.

san chai tong zi

this is the san chai tong zi (seng chai ya) after my makeover. i've given the face a bit of blushing tone to make the statue look more lively as you can see that the god is kind of a young kid. i've also changed most of the colour from the original to give this statue a very different look from the past. i took 5 days to complete the job and charges the owner $360.00.

this is the statue of san chai tong zi ( seng chai ya). its about 10 inches in height and made of wood. as you can see from the picture, its been badly damaged due to long term prayings and the paint is cracking. i need to plaster all the cracks and smoothen the surface. its a very painstaking procedure cos the smaller the statue, the harder the job.

this is the tai sang lao jun after my makeover. i've changed some colour to the statue's face,seat,platform and done some fine drawings on the platform for decor. i've also changed the moustache and its weapon hair. pls take a closer look of the gold parts,the face feature and compare with the picture before make over. job duration 4 days,charges $420.00.

on the left is the taoist god named tai sang lao jun. its about 12 inches in height and made of wood.the statue might looks new and ok to you but some owners are just more particular about the face feature of the god especially the eyes. its lack of some x factor which i can't describe also,, but whatever the case is, i will definitely give him a complete makeover which the owner will be glad.

this is the buddha after the re-gold plating job i've done. u might have seen lots of buddha,statues,or even some signboard with gold plating, bypassers will only see gold coloured artifects and will not notice whether the gold shines or not. if u look carefully,,u should be able to see my reflection on the buddha while i'm taking this shot. why most of the gold plated artifects that you've seen before doesn't have this type of shine consists of various reasons. job duration 5 days, charges $800.00

on the left is a buddha made of copper standing 16inches in height, its been pass to me for a re-gold plating job. copper statues are heavy and needs to be extra careful while doing a re-gold plating especially the under coating must be done with special method and procedure or the statue will have corrosion in future.

this is the tua pek gong after my makeover. i've re-apply the statue's gold using genuine gold leaflets from hongkong and repaint all the coloured portions,re-draw all the features as u can compare to the statue before makeover, i've used about 3-4 days to complete this project. charges $380-$480 depending on the condition of the statue including all materials and workmanship.
